The “Sandora” society was established on the initiative of Kristupas Lokis in 1904, as an evangelical charity and cultural education society. It acted mainly in Klaipėda region. The association published about 20 books, issued the monthly magazine “Pagalba” (editor – V. Gaigalaitis), helped students, maintained museums, shelters for children and the elderly, a choir, an orchestra, and a bookstore. In 1908, the society bought premises in Klaipėda, at 38 Friedrich Wilhelm Str. / Laukininkų st. (currently 20 Tillų St.) and started collecting Lithuanian press. The aim of the society was to create a large fund of Lithuanian literature.

In the premises of “Sandora” in 1922, the first Lithuanian high school (later named as Vytautas the Great High School) was founded. “Sandora” was restored in 1989 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Since 1996 it operated in the building at 35 Turgaus St., maintained a charity canteen, and had a meeting hall. Now in the building at 20 Tiltų St. there are various shops on the ground floor, and apartments on the first.
