Coordinates: 55.493961 22.182840
Object address: Šilalė City Cemetery, Šilalė, Lithuania
Municipality: Šilalė district
The granite monument, depicting three generations of deportees – children, adolescents and adults – seeking for warmth, was opened in 2005 in Šilalė City Cemetery on the corner of Zobelijos and Kapų streets, the location of the former chapel. The people on the monument are sheltered under the wings of an angel. The monument, designed by the former deportee, architect Stasys Kruša, is located at the main gate of the cemetery. The monument often hosts various commemoration events. The works were conducted by the brothers Albinas and Gerimantas Rimkai – former deportees as well.
The inscription on the monument is laconic, because a list of all the names would require a huge granite plate. The historian Edvardas Vidmantas calculated that the number of people from Šilalė district, exiled to Siberia during the Stalinist era was more than 2300, while the number of prisoners – more than 830. The majority of them have never returned to their homeland.
