Jurbarkas Ragainė

Going up from the mouth of the river Mituva, in the second bend there is a deep pool called Ragaine. Here, on the left side of the Mituva, begin homesteads the townsmen. A long while ago, after dark, witches used to bathe their children here. When bathed, the little ones were squealing so that they could be heard far away.  Then the withes would bathe themselves, wash the laundry and the sound of dollies echoed until nightfall. After the advent of Christianity, witches were caught and drowned in this pool. The water bubbled here for three days… They say that those witches are still living at the bottom of the river and pulling all bathers underneath.

During the Soviet years, an industrial port was established here, where barges carrying gravel and sand from the Jurbarkas quarry were being loaded around the clock.
