Jurbarkas is located near important waterways and land routes. The first customs office in Jurbarkas was established in 1540 by order of Žygimantas the Elder. In 1797 a customs checkpoint was founded and in 1819 it was turned into the first class customs. Since the old buildings almost wrecked, new ones were built near the Mituva, on the road to Smalininkai. The main building of the customs was a two-story brick building. In 1923 the head of the customs office and the commission handed the customs premises over to the assistant land manager of Raseiniai County. This included the walls of a burned two-story building, a wooden house and a warehouse; a woodshed, a stable, part of the ruins of a burned bathhouse and a brick watchman’s house with an attic. In 1924-1925 the customs buildings were sold out. In 2015, the foundations of the customs office were restored while managing the manor park and a monument commemorating the path of book-carriers of the Jurbarkas region was erected.
