A memorial stone for five high school students

Five high school students were the first victims of the Soviet occupation regime in Jurbarkas, in 1940.  The monument was erected on May 21, 1999 by Jurbarkas A. Giedraitis-Giedrius high school.

The story was that one high school student threw a chalk rag from the blackboard, hit the portrait of Stalin and smeared it. One Jewish girl informed the authorities about this.  The other four students knew who did it, but didn’t report it. The school students were arrested on the last days of October of 1940.

Edvardas Mockevičius, sixteen years old – from Skirsnemunė. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. Died in the camp. Vladas Paršelis, also a sixteen-year-old, born in Anykščiai. When the war started, he was released from Raseiniai prison. Actively participated in the Union of Defenders of Freedom of Lithuania established by teacher Petras Paulaitis, then joined Paulaitis’ partisan unit. Died in action in the Balniai forest near Daugai village on July, 1946. His body was brought to Jurbarkas and dumped in the market square.

Vincas Pocius was the only son in the family was born near Girdžiai.  He escaped from Raseiniai prison and studied at the gymnasium for some time.  On June 17, 1943 received a matriculation certificate, and on May 3, 1944 died of tuberculosis.

Leopoldas Pučiliauskas-Pučiuliauskas-Pečiulis was the oldest of those arrested, b. in 1922 in Slavikai. He lived in the village of Barzdžiai (now Pauliai). He was sentenced to eight years, but all traces of him disappear in Raseiniai prison.

Steponas Vaitkevičius b. on December 2, 1924. Jurbarke, a scout, was sentenced to eight years. Died in prison.
