Municipality: Tauragė district
The monument in memory of the partisans of Kęstutis Militaray District was opened on 30 May 2009 during a city celebration in the square of the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity. The monument was created by Regimantas Midvikis (1947-2015), a sculptor and winner of the National Prize from Tauragė.
This is an original sculptural cubic figure, made of red polished granite and featuring contemporary shapes. It symbolises a destroyed partisan hideout, command post or a bunker. The sculpture consists of three large fragments: the plastic top, the pedestal and the socle. The bottom of the pedestal features an inscription in large font, stating that the monument is dedicated to the partisans of the Kęstutis Military District, and the years of tragic wars – 1944-1953. All four planes of the plastic part feature several religious and national symbols, slightly indented in the planes and consisting of large sculptural details. The focus points of all four planes are an allegory to remind that in the mid. 20th c. the Lithuanian nation stood at the crossroads of history oppressed and exiled, but never giving up and struggling to oppose the oppressor. This concept is very vividly expressed in the dynamics of the connecting planes, as well as the monumental and expressive plastics of granite.
The monument also reminds that on 12 September 1946 the Joint Kęstutis Military District (as of April 1948 – Kęstutis Military District) was formed from five smaller military districts. It covered the entire south Samogitia and operated until 1953. The District was led by strong and honourable leaders: Juozas Kasperavičius-Visvydas, Jonas Žemaitis-Tylius-Vytautas, Henrikas Danilevičius and others.
