In the postwar years at S. Daukanto street 8 the KGB division was located; cellars hold black history of torture while interrogations were carried out in rooms of the first and second floors. In 1997 on the crossroad of I. Kanto ir S. Daukanto streets a Memorial to victims of Nazi and Soviet occupation during 1940-1990 was unveiled and blessed. Author of the project – architect from Klaipėda Gytis Tiškus. In the centre of memorial – a bronze figure of a man, created by Juozas Genevičius, reminiscent by posture a silhouette of the Pensive Christ, typical Lithuanian folk sculpture. However, his head is pressed not by wreath of thorns – it is tightened by a steel wire. The survivors from all Lithuania – deportees, prisoners or their relatives brought black granite and field stones with carved names of martyred persons. There are about 500 such stones.
