Neringa City Library has been established in 1956. As of 1990, the library was renamed as Neringa City Nida Library, and as of 1 January 1996, it has been reorganised into Neringa City Municipality Public Library with branches in Preila and Juodkrantė.
On 11 November 2005, it was named after Viktoras Miliūnas, in memory of the great writer and chronicler of Nida. The writer used to live and write in Nida (1961-1986), while the lagoon, Nida and the entire Curonian Spit were the major theme of his work. The Curonian Spit and its residents were Viktoras Miliūnas’ inexhaustible source of topics.
The writer’s wife Angelė and son Kęstutis have donated to the resort’s library a part of V. Miliūnas’ archive: his manuscripts, books and photos. The library stores the writer’s works, his bibliography and other valuable documents.
It is also decorated with V. Miliūnas’ portrait, painted by his friend artist Bronė Mingilaitė-Uogintienė (Nida, 1981. Oil, canvas).
The funds of Neringa Municipality Viktoras Miliūnas Public Library and its brances have accumulated about 98 thousand items of fiction, philosophy, public, natural, historical sciences, various periodicals and other publications. There are also about 2,000 items of various ethnographic prints on the Curonian Spit, its history, nature and beauty.
