The memorial board with a bas-relief for Rimantas Černiauskas, writer, prosaist and long-term head of the guild of the Klaipėda brothers of the quill, was opened on the old town building at Aukštosios Street 9 on 10 November 2017. He used to work in this building in 1997-2011. The memorial board was designed by the architect Adomas Skiezgelas.
Rimantas Černiauskas was born on 10 September 1950 in Daugai (Alytus district). He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics of Vilnius University in 1973 and then worked as a teacher. He made his literary début as a poet and wrote prose since 1974. In 1984, he became a member of the Lithuanian Writers’ Union and as of 1987 – Chairman of LWU Klaipėda Division. The short prose of R. Černiauskas is characterised by novella structure with a distinct dynamic pace and emphasized ending. His works feature current-day stories and realistic motive-driven characters. By the decision of Klaipėda Municipality Administration, in 2010, he was awarded as the Master of Culture of Klaipėda. He died on 1 June 2011 in Klaipėda and was buried in Švėkšna.
Another piece, which reminds of R. Černiauskas, is the bronze earthworm – a book character, smiling from a notebook page – decorating the Old Town Bar (Bažnyčių Street 4), well-liked by artists and actors. The cheerful composition, based on a children’s book Slieko Pasaka (The Earthworm’s Tale) was designed by the sculptor Sergejus Plotnikovas from Klaipėda, asked by the writer’s friend, cultural figure and poet Dalia Bielskytė, winner of the Zigmas Gėlė Prize.
