Object address: S. Daukanto Street 28, Klaipeda, Lithuania

Municipality: Klaipėda

In 1797 the citizens of Memel founded a Fund for Merchants’ Widows. In the second half of the 19th c. it purchased a plot at S. Daukanto Street 28 and in 1878 built a shelter for merchants’ widows. The masonry building had two floors, was 124 feet (~38 m) long with three entrances on the street size. The façade featured more architectural details: the windows were decorated with cornices, resting against modillions. The windows in the extended wall above the second floor provided light to the attic. The top of the avant-corps (with staircases) featured three arched windows. The building had 6 apartments and its attractive façade decorated the street. In 1825 the building was renovated.
In 1942 it was taken over by the German occupation authorities, which gave a part of it to Klaipėda Chamber of Industry and Commerce. After the war the building was nationalised and turned into communal apartments. In 1976 it has undergone major reconstructions.
Currently (2017) the building is shabby and needs reparations.
