Object address: Tiltų street (at Biržos Bridge), Klaipeda, Lithuania

Municipality: Klaipėda

In 1889, the merchants built the original pillar of information, referred to as the metrological pillar, at Biržos Bridge. The pillar is five metres high and rectangular in shape. It is reminiscent of the 18th century stone post mile pillars with small roofs and a wind rose. The top of the pillar is decorated with a light, openwork weathercock.

The column had a mechanical clock, an aneroid barometer with protective glass, a thermometer, and a control metre installed in it. In addition to that, it also presented some information on when the Moon and the Sun rise and set and the length of the day and night. The middle part of the pillar indicated the geographical location and other information on Klaipėda. People were also attracted to the pillar because it had a machine that switched among different advertisements every 30 seconds.

The column was disassembled during the reconstruction of the exchange in 1908. However, the pillar of information was restored in 2002, during the 750 anniversary of the establishment of Klaipėda. It is shorter than the previous pillar, but it serves the same function. The pillar depicts a map of Klaipėda and indicates the most important information.
