In 1864, the building at 21 Herkaus Manto st. (former Liepojos St. 7) was built. It was funded by Julius Ludwig Wiener, a philanthropist and merchant. On July 31st, 1865, it became the Female Education Institute, The institute was home to around 20 ladies from poor families. They were taken care of, financially supported, and well-educated.
The architecture of the shelter is very similar to that of the Merchant’s shelter as both are two floors high and built from red bricks. The lot of the Female Education Institute was enclosed with a red brick fence. There was a large gate that lead into the central street. The institute operated until the middle of the 20th century.
After the war, a medical facility was established in this building. In 2003, the building was privatised and reconstructed. Presently, the shopping centre Mega Plaza can be found there.
