The Gas Factory (47 Liepų st.) project was prepared and the construction works were managed by J. Hartmann, the director of the gas factory in Königsberg. The location for the gas factory was far from convenient because the coal that was used to extract the gasses, had to be transported from the Danė port using carriages. Later, from 1921 until 1923, the factory was connected to the city’s railway system.
In 1861, the factory complex was composed of fourteen buildings, all of which were of varying shapes and sizes. These buildings included steam tank plants, machinery, pressure control and cooling rooms, distilleries, gas storage tanks, workshops, storage, master’s quarters, among other structures. Better-looking buildings were building along the street. These included the gas storage tanks, administration buildings, and the director’s living quarters.
The gas factory underwent several reconstructions and its territory only grew. In 1936, 28 structures comprised the factory complex. Nowadays, the buildings of the factory are all abandoned and yet again await reconstruction.
