On the night of March 2nd, going into the 3rd, of 1989, Vytautas Vičiulis, Klaipėda’s restorer and folk artist, lit himself on fire and burned to death in Lenin Square (present day Atgimimo Square), next to the monument of Lenin. He was one of the few Lithuanians, who decided to end their lives this way on political grounds. A year after, the monument to Lenin was still there, but with the efforts of Adolgas Bušauskas, a commemorative plaque appeared there.
V. Vičiulis was a restorer and a self-educated visual artists, who had a special sense of nature. He was especially good at picking up the meaning of folk songs, but he was often alone and misunderstood by other people. A rumour has spread throughout Lithuania that Vičiulis burnt himself wrapped up in the Lithuanian flag. V. Vičiulis was buried in the Laugaliai cemetery.
