A commemorative plaque was unveiled on February 15th, 2009, which can be found on the building at 7 Vytauto st., dedicated to the citizens of Klaipėda, who have died in the war in Afghanistan in 1979–1989. The aforementioned building used to be a Soviet Military Commissariat. Klaipėdians were dispatched to the war in Afghanistan from this commissariat. It was a place where relatives could see the young men one last time before they were dispatches to serve in the military, which was compulsory.
5,000 Lithuanians, who served in the Soviet military, fought in the Soviet-Afghan war. 96 young Lithuanians died there, 9 of which were from Klaipėda. The names of the Klaipėdians, who never returned from war to their homeland, are written in the plaque.
